The Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies (AFWA)

AFWA represents North America’s fish and wildlife agencies to advance sound management and conservation of wildlife resources and habitats. When new technologies rendered their website obsolete, AFWA contacted us to redesign it for modern users. Our initial review revealed over 1,000 pages of content—much of which either wasn’t being or couldn’t be accessed by visitors. Next, our team conducted a thorough site audit and developed a content strategy; we identified outdated information for immediate removal and recommended archiving “institutional knowledge” for download-by-request. Simplifying the IA, trimming the main navigation, and eliminating competing layers of sub-navigation made all content easier to find. A global keyword search and responsive design further improved functionality.

We then designed AFWA’s new search platform, State Wildlife Law Project, creating a microsite that utilized the CMS and templates of the redesigned site. The microsite supports keyword search, category browsing, sorted results, and robust filtering.
